What should have been a fierce but memorable derby instead turned into one of the darkest moments in Brazilian football history as the clash between Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and Clube Atlético Mineiro ended in chaos, with a staggering 23 players sent off following a mass brawl.
The violence overshadowed Cruzeiro’s narrow 1–0 victory in the Campeonato Mineiro final. Tensions had been simmering throughout the match before things finally boiled over late in the game at the Mineirão in Belo Horizonte.
The flashpoint came during a heated confrontation involving Atlético Mineiro goalkeeper Everson and Cruzeiro midfielder Christian. What started as a clash between the two quickly spiralled out of control. Players from both teams rushed in, substitutes left the bench, and within moments the pitch had turned into the scene of a full-scale melee.
Punches were thrown, players shoved and kicked, and officials struggled to restore order as security personnel tried to separate the groups.
When the dust finally settled, the scale of the chaos became clear. The referee documented the incidents after the match and issued 23 red cards in his official report — an unprecedented figure in Brazilian football.
The previous record had stood for more than 70 years. Back in 1954, a match between Associação Portuguesa de Desportos and Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas saw 22 players dismissed, a mark many believed would never be surpassed.
Unfortunately, the derby also left real consequences beyond the disciplinary record. Atlético goalkeeper Everson was reportedly left bleeding and injured during the altercation, highlighting just how intense and dangerous the confrontation became.
Brazilian football authorities are now expected to review the extraordinary scenes, with potential suspensions and sanctions looming for players involved in a match that will likely be remembered less for the football and more for the chaos that followed.
