The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has made history by winning the Afrobasket championship for the fifth time in a row, setting a new record that may stand the test of time. The team defeated Mali 78-64 in the final on Sunday at the Palais de Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
This victory marks Nigeria’s seventh Women’s Afrobasket title and extends the team’s unbeaten run in the competition to 29 matches since 2015. The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hailed the team’s performance as “monumental.”
“We are the best sporting country on the continent, and the vision of Mr. President is to consistently maximize this with scientific strategies and policies at the sports commission,” said NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.
NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, attributed the team’s success to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s passion for Nigerian sports. “The passion President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has for Nigerian sports is already paying off with consistent international success of most of our national teams,” Dikko said. “This is what Nigerians have yearned for, to have a President who is very committed to sports development and seeing this back-to-back international feat coming in football and now basketball is no mean feat.”
The D’Tigress are expected to return to Nigeria on Monday and will be welcomed by President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa.
