Former Nigeria national football team captain William Troost-Ekong has safely returned to the United Kingdom to reunite with his family after being caught up in rising tensions in the Gulf region.
The Nigerian defender had been stranded in Qatar after escalating military tensions in the region led authorities to close airspace and suspend several sporting activities, leaving expatriates and professional athletes unable to travel.
Troost-Ekong, who recently joined Al Ahli SC, was among the players affected by the disruption as flights across parts of the Gulf were temporarily halted amid security concerns.
The crisis intensified following reports of missile exchanges in the Middle East involving regional powers, prompting several countries in the Gulf to close their airspace as a precautionary measure.
With travel restrictions gradually easing, Troost-Ekong has now successfully left the region and returned to the United Kingdom, where he has reunited with his family after the tense situation.
The experienced centre-back, who previously captained Nigeria and earned more than 80 caps for the national team, had recently begun a new chapter in his club career in the Middle East before the geopolitical crisis disrupted football activities in the region.
While football operations in the Gulf continue to adjust to the evolving security situation, Troost-Ekong’s safe return has brought relief to fans and colleagues concerned about players caught in the unfolding crisis.
