Norwegian club Molde FK has confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Daniel Daga will not be part of the team’s match squad until further notice following a court verdict that sentenced the player to six months in prison.
In an official statement released after the ruling, the club said it had taken note of the judgment issued by the Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court, while also acknowledging that the player has appealed the decision.
“Molde Football Club is aware of the verdict, which was published today on the mailing lists of Romsdal District Court,” the club said in a press release.
According to the statement, Daga’s legal team has already filed an appeal, meaning the judgment is not yet final under Norwegian law and will continue through the legal system.
“The player has, through his defense attorney, notified an appeal of the verdict. The case is therefore not final and will be processed further in the legal system,” the club added.
Molde described the situation as extremely challenging for everyone involved, stressing the club’s dual responsibility to support its employee while recognizing the seriousness of the case.
“This is a very demanding matter for all involved. As an employer, Molde Football Club has a responsibility to look after our employees in a responsible manner, while at the same time having great respect for the seriousness of the matter and for the burdens this entails for all parties concerned,” the statement said.
Given the circumstances and the ongoing legal proceedings, the club confirmed that Daga will remain unavailable for selection.
“Based on the situation and the ongoing legal process, the club has decided that the player will not be part of the match squad until further notice.”
Molde further noted that it would refrain from making additional comments while the legal process continues.
“Out of consideration for the further legal process and all parties involved, Molde FK is not commenting further on the case at this time.”
The statement was signed by Tarje Nordstrand Jacobsen, chairman of the board of Molde FK, and Vegard Storvik, chief executive of Molde Football AS.
Daga, a former captain of the Nigeria U-20 national football team, was sentenced by the Norwegian court after being found guilty of committing a sexual act without consent. The player has maintained his innocence and intends to challenge the ruling through the appeal process.
