Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was left visibly emotional after inspiring Galatasaray S.K. to a crucial 1–0 victory over Liverpool F.C. in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash in Istanbul on Tuesday night.
Osimhen played a decisive role in the match, providing the assist for Mario Lemina, whose 7th-minute header proved enough to give the Turkish champions a slender advantage heading into the return leg at Anfield.
After the match, the Nigerian forward expressed deep gratitude to Galatasaray supporters, admitting he struggled to hold back tears following the overwhelming show of support from the home crowd at RAMS Park.
“Tonight was very emotional for me; I struggled to hold back my tears,” Osimhen said after the game. “The show of love from the Galatasaray fans is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.”
The striker added that the affection he has received since arriving in Istanbul has extended beyond the pitch, noting that the club’s supporters have embraced not only him but also his family.
“From the first day I arrived in Istanbul, you have shown great love and respect to me, not only to me, but also to my family and those close to me,” he said.
Osimhen also reflected on the deeper meaning of the moment, describing football as more than just competition.
“Moments like these remind me that football is not just a game. Football is love, loyalty and unity,” the Super Eagles star said.
The 27-year-old pledged to continue giving his all whenever he represents the Turkish giants, promising to repay the fans’ support with relentless commitment on the pitch.
“I promise that every time I step onto the pitch for this badge, for this club and for these incredible fans, I will continue to fight with everything I have,” he added.
Galatasaray’s narrow victory gives them a valuable edge ahead of the decisive second leg in England, where Liverpool will attempt to overturn the deficit at Anfield.
