Eighteen-year-old Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu celebrated a major milestone in his young career after securing his first victory in the FIA Formula 3 Championship during the opening round of the 2026 season in Melbourne, Australia.
The Campos Racing driver delivered a composed and commanding performance in the Feature Race at the Melbourne Grand Prix circuit, overtaking rivals early in the race before controlling the pace to the chequered flag.
Starting from second on the grid, Ugochukwu briefly slipped to third at the opening corner before fighting back to pass Britain’s Freddie Slater and teammate Théophile Naël to seize the lead. From there, the teenager steadily built a gap and maintained control of the race despite late safety-car interruptions.
The victory marks the first FIA Formula 3 race win of Ugochukwu’s career and places him at the top of the drivers’ championship standings after the opening round of the season.
Born in New York City to Nigerian fashion icon Oluchi Onweagba and Italian designer Luca Orlandi, Ugochukwu has quickly emerged as one of the brightest young talents in global motorsport. The 18-year-old previously competed in multiple junior series and was also part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme earlier in his career.
His Melbourne triumph adds another major achievement to his rising résumé and signals a strong start to the 2026 campaign as he aims to establish himself among the leading prospects on the road to Formula 1.
