SURAJ LAWAL STRIKE ENDS ABIA WARRIORS’ WINLESS RUN IN OWERRI

NPFL26 | MATCHDAY 17 REPORT

Abia Warriors returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over NPFL newcomers Kun Khalifat at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, thanks to a late winner from in-form forward Suraj Lawal.

The result brought an end to the Warriors’ five-game winless streak, while also marking their second straight victory at the Dan Anyiam Stadium—having defeated Heartland by the same scoreline last season.

Head Coach Imama Amapakabo made just one change from the side that drew 0–0 with Rivers United, handing Paul Samson a starting role ahead of Chukwuemeka Obioma.

The first half offered limited opportunities, with both teams cautious in their build-up. Samson came close in the 42nd minute, while former Abia Warriors winger Moses Uche forced a superb save from Odah Okiemute a minute later.

The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute. Substitute Shedrack Asiegbu intercepted in midfield and delivered a pinpoint pass to Suraj Lawal, who held off his marker and turned clinically to fire home the winner—his composure and finish sending the away bench and fans into jubilation.

Kun Khalifat pushed for a response, but Abia Warriors’ defence, marshalled by Innocent Gabriel, Kunle Adeleke, Somiari Alalibo, and standout sub Israel Joseph, held firm to secure all three points.
