Abia Warriors Salvage Late Point Against Rivers United in NPFL Thriller

Suraj Lawal struck deep into injury time to earn Abia Warriors a dramatic 1-1 draw against Rivers United in a high-tempo Matchday 16 clash of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) held at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The Warriors, who dominated much of the game, were left to rue multiple missed chances before finally rescuing a point in stoppage time. From the first whistle, the hosts pressed aggressively, pinning Rivers United back but failing to convert several clear-cut opportunities.

In the second half, Abia Warriors turned up the heat, camping in the visitors’ half. Despite waves of attacks, Rivers United’s defence held firm, relying on quick counterattacks to relieve pressure.

Controversy struck in the 55th minute when Suraj Lawal pounced on a spilled shot by goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena and tapped home what appeared to be the opener, only for the assistant referee to flag him offside — a decision that drew protests from the home bench and fans.

As the clock ticked down, Rivers United struck against the run of play. Ubong Friday led a swift counterattack and delivered a precise cross that substitute Maclyn Biokpo Jenewari finished clinically in the 86th minute.

However, Abia Warriors refused to give in. Four minutes into added time, Lawal redeemed himself by rising highest to meet Jubrin Faiz’s corner, heading home a deserved equalizer that salvaged a point and sparked wild celebrations in the stands.

The Warriors will next travel to face Kun Khalifat Football Club of Owerri on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.
