Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially retired from international football, ending a memorable chapter with Nigeria’s senior national team that spanned nearly a decade.
In an heartfelt statement, Troost-Ekong described the experience as the “greatest privilege” of his life.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter,” he said.
Troost-Ekong made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2015 after a call-up by the late Stephen Keshi, who he credited for believing in him and igniting his national team journey.
“In 2015, a phone call from the late Stephen Keshi changed my life. A month later, the Big Boss gave me my debut. His belief in me inspired a desire to follow in his footsteps.”
The 30-year-old defender went on to earn 83 caps, captaining the team and featuring in five major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three AFCON editions. His standout achievement came at AFCON 2023, where he led Nigeria to the final, scored crucial goals, and was named *Player of the Tournament.
“To have achieved 83 senior caps, played in five major tournaments, won three medals, and broken a few records — I have lived my dream,” he stated.
Beyond the medals and accolades, Troost-Ekong was known for his leadership and fierce commitment on the pitch. He thanked his teammates, coaches, and Nigerian fans for their unwavering support.
“Your support has carried me through every high and every challenge. I will stand with you as you stood with me.”
Although stepping away from the national team, the former Watford and current PAOK defender made it clear his commitment to Nigeria remains:
“This isn’t a final goodbye. My work within Nigerian communities continues, just as my love and passion for this team will never fade.”
