Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, has achieved a historic milestone by ascending to 8th place in the latest FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike. This marks the highest-ever global ranking for an African women’s basketball team.
The team’s rise in the rankings follows their triumphant performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where they secured their fifth consecutive title by defeating Mali 78–64 in the final. Under the leadership of Head Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress has maintained an unbroken winning streak in AfroBasket games since 2015.
Their consistent dominance in African women’s basketball has not only solidified their position as the top team on the continent but also propelled them into the global top 10, a feat previously unattained by any African women’s team.
In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the Nigerian government awarded each player $100,000, a housing unit, and national honors. The coaching and technical staff received $50,000 each and similar accolades.
