The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced that the 2025/26 season will kick off on August 22, 2025, and conclude on May 22, 2026. According to NPFL Chairman, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, this decision is part of the league’s efforts to establish a traditional period for the competition, allowing clubs, players, match officials, and scouts to plan their calendars accordingly.
Elegbeleye emphasized the league’s commitment to adhering to its calendar, stating, “This is the first time in many years, perhaps since the start of the new era Nigeria Premier Football League in 2005, (20 years) that a date for kick-off and ending will be faithfully implemented. That is a commitment we made and a promise delivered.”
The chairman further noted, “Today, we are also here to announce that the 2025/26 season will be commencing on August 22, 2025, and will be completed on May 22, 2026. This is to maintain a calendar we have now established from the last season.”
The NPFL chairman highlighted the notable achievements of the previous season, including Remo Stars’ championship win with three matches to spare. He also provided a breakdown of key statistics, including 380 games played, 286 wins and 94 draws. 784 goals scored, 1380 yellow cards issued and 56 red cards recorded.
Nasarawa United’s Yusuf Anas topped the goal scorers chart with 18 goals, followed by Rabiu Ali of Kano Pillars with 13 goals and Anthony Ijoma of Abia Warriors with 12 goals.
The NPFL also reported a significant increase in broadcast coverage, with 188 games aired on Startimes and over 200 fixtures streamed on Propel Sports Africa’s OTT platform globally.
With the new season’s kick-off date set, fans can look forward to another exciting campaign in Nigeria’s top-flight football league.
