A contentious penalty decision proved to be the turning point as Plateau United edged out Abia Warriors 1-0 in their Matchday 28 clash in the Nigeria Premier Football League at the New Jos Stadium, Jos.
The hosts were awarded a debatable penalty in the 55th minute, which Olawole Doyeni converted to hand Plateau United the lead. Abia Warriors’ Technical Adviser, Imama Amapakabo, had made three tactical changes to his lineup, introducing Maxwell Kangeshima, Innocent Godwin, and Andrew Abalaogu, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
The visitors were left reeling after two penalty claims were denied by centre referee Grema Mohammed. Ojonugwa Adejoh appeared to be fouled inside the box, while Sunday Megwo was pulled back by a Plateau United defender, denying him a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Despite a spirited fightback, Abia Warriors were unable to overturn the deficit, succumbing to a heartbreaking defeat. The loss will undoubtedly be a tough pill to swallow for Imama Amapakabo’s side, who will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
