Akwa United Football Club is bringing back a familiar face – Coach Kennedy Boboye – with a mid-season managerial contract. The club’s management signed the deal at their Uyo office on Monday, January 6, 2025, and Boboye is expected to start work later this week. This isn’t Boboye’s first stint with Akwa United; he previously led the team to an NPFL title victory in 2021.
Elder Paul Bassey, Chairman of Akwa United, welcomed Coach Boboye back, calling his return “necessary”. Bassey cited Boboye’s impressive track record and past successes with the club as the reason behind the decision to reappoint him. Elder Bassey is hopeful that Coach Boboye’s vast experience will positively impact the team, leading to a resurgence in their performance in the second half of the season.
Coach Boboye joined Akwa United in the 2019-2020 NPFL season and led the team to a league title in the 2020-2021 season. This was his second NPFL title, having previously won with Plateau United in 2017. Under his guidance, Akwa United made their CAF Champions League debut in 2021, but after a string of poor results, Boboye resigned as head coach in 2022.
After leaving Akwa United, Coach Boboye had short spells with Heartland FC and Sunshine Stars before returning to Akwa United (the Promise Keepers) for the second half of the 2024-2025 NPFL season.
