As SSC Napoli and Atalanta Bergamo continue to impress in the 2022/2023 Italian Serie A season, there appear to be a sub theme, where two strikers, Ademola Lookman of Atalanta and Victor Osimhen of Napoli ignited a side attraction, at the top of the Scorers chart in the Italian top flight.
Having managed to put behind them the disappointment of failing in their bid to qualify Nigeria for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the two Super Eagles strikers are now in the form of their lives, and have held Serie A spellbound, by posting big performances, week in week out, especially since after the Mundial in Qatar.
Initially, it was Osimhen who continually impress by not just putting up five star performances in all the matches he played thus far for Napoli, he has as well capped such displays with goals, be it in the league or in the European Champions League.
The prodigy who cut his teeth as a potent striker, in front of goal at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup, in Qatar, to date, has 13 breathtaking goals to his name at the top of the Serie A, scorers chart.
Closely following him in the standing is Ademola Lookman, who has now scored his 12th goal of the season for Atalanta Bergamo, against Sampdoria FC, where they eventually won.
Lookman who joined from RB Leipzig of Germany, scored his latest goal in the 58th minute, meaning with 12 goals in his kitty, the former Everton forward, who was on loan at Leicester City last season, is just one goal shy of Victor Osimhen’s tally.
While Osimhen’s heroics has kept Napoli at the summit of the Serie A log, 10 points clear of second placed Inter Milan. Lookman’s Atalanta is fourth, a further 2 points adrift of the table toppers.
While Serie A fans enjoy the magic and art of goal scoring by these compatriots, it’s worthy to note the very healthy rivalry between the two. But will the less illustrious Lookman Ademola be able to eclipse or eventually overtake Victor Osimhen in the scorers’ chart?
