Top ranked Africa table tennis player Quadri Aruna says he is proud of his performance at the just concluded ITTF Africa cup in Lagos.
Quadri who sustained a potential tigh tideness injury in the last set of epic men’s singles final against former Africa No. 1 Omar Assar admitted that injury and sport are two siamese twins which can hardly be separated.
“It was a very good tough match for me, we’re used to each other” Quadri says after the match, “and I gave all because I wanted to win.”
Omar Assar won the 1st set 14-12, while Quadri claimed the 2nd and 3rd sets 11-8 and 11-4 respectively.
However, Assar fought back with a straight two sets wins to restored his lead 3-2. In a rollercoaster dimension Quadri also win the penultimate set 11-4 to tie the game 3-3 and set up a tension soaked last set.
“When I couldn’t move very well, I was already feeling something like tightness in my tigh. of course I never wanted to give up and I was pushing to pull through the game and eventually I tied the game 3-3 (after 6 round of sets).
“But finally when I was leading 4-0 in the last set I felt the pains more and it’s one of those things in sport. But I feel very happy with my performance here.
The injury dealt a big blow to Quadri’s quest to win the Africa cup in front of Lagos frenzy crowd as he struggled to continue to complete the game after several minutes of receiving treatment which resulted to having bandage wrapped around his tigh for the remainder of the game.
“My injury is like tigh tideness but I really don’t know yet until I go for proper medical examination. I don’t know how long the recuperating period would last but I wish I get back soon.
